What are layering and trimming materials and what advantages do they offer?
Layering and trimming materials are used in our weatherproof outdoor clothing, which is worn as a second or third layer – i.e. on the outside. They are made from technical synthetic fibres, are light, packable and provide effective protection against rain, snow and/or wind.
How do layering and trimming materials work?
Wind- and waterproof or water repellent fabrics for jackets and trousers have a thin membrane or coating on the inside of the outer material. These ensure that no moisture can get in or that wind is kept out. At the same time the (membrane) layer supports the fabric’s breathability and helps effectively transport moisture away from the body – for a dry, comfy feeling.
What types of layering and trimming materials exist?
Layering materials come in three designs that differ in their properties and uses:
- as simple dual-layered design with a separate lining to protect the membrane and enhance comfort
- as particularly light 2.5-layered design with an ultra-thin film inside the material instead of a lining
- as very durable three-layered design with a laminated supporting material on the inside of the garment.
What is the DWR coating?
Waterproof and water-repellent outdoor clothing has an additional PFC-free DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating on the outside or the upper material. It ensures that raindrops and snowflakes are repelled.
How else are layering and trimming materials used?
According to body mapping principles, selected jackets, trousers and waistcoats in the Martini Sportswear collection receive a partial water- or windproof coating. These designs protect body parts that are particularly exposed (like the front of the torso) from adverse weather; at the same time, other areas (like the back or the arms) remain flexible and breathable with softer, stretchier fabrics.
How sustainable are layering and trimming materials?
Particularly sustainable layering and trimming fabrics are made from recycled materials, like Pertex® Revolve™, a premium waterproof functional fabric made from 100% recycled polyester, which can be fully recycled at the end of its lifecycle.
