What is padding, where is it used and what advantages does it offer?

Padding in this case refers to synthetic insulation that is used in warm jackets, waistcoats, trousers or skirts, which form the second or third layer in a typical layering scenario. It combines the advantages of down with the robustness of synthetic fibres and is extremely light, highly insulating, water-repellent, windproof, breathable, moisture-regulating and warm even when wet. Since it is easy to compress, padded clothes can fit in any rucksack.

How does padding work?

Much like down, synthetic padding forms countless little air pockets surrounded by millions of super-fine fibres. They retain body heat and allow the air to circulate. This ensures excellent insulation and thermal regulation. Unlike down, synthetic padding retains its performance even when wet, so it is suited for strenuous activities, rainy days or regions with high humidity.

How warm is padding?

Padding comes in varying material thicknesses – the more insulating fibres per square metre, the warmer the garment. Common fill volumes are:

  • 20 to 60g/m²: light insulation in clothes for spring, autumn, or chilly summer days
  • 80 to 100g/m²: medium insulation in clothes for cooler days
  • 130g/m² and more: very warm insulation in clothes for very cold winter days

Sometimes different fill powers are used in one garment, for example higher grammage on the torso, where you want more warmth, but less on the arms, where breathability and freedom of movement are essential.

Where else is synthetic insulation used?

According to body mapping principles, selected jackets and waistcoats in the Martini Sportswear collection receive partial padding. These designs protect body parts that are particularly exposed (like the front of the torso) from losing heat; at the same time, other areas (like the back or the arms) remain flexible and breathable with softer, stretchier fabrics.

Is padded clothing weatherproof?

Waterproof and water-repellent padded clothing has an additional PFC-free DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating on the outside of the upper material. It ensures that raindrops and snowflakes are repelled.

Is padding safe?

Synthetic padding is free of animal materials, making it ethically sound, easy to care for and allergy-friendly.

How sustainable is padding?

Out of respect for the environment, Martini Sportswear only uses padding made from 100% recycled fibres that are also certified according to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, making them particularly skin-friendly.
